The DEVONtechnologies eco-system as I call it, is built around DEVONthink Pro (Office). DEVONthink Pro (Office) as part of the DEVONtechnologies eco-systemĪlthough you can view websites in DEVONthink Pro, bookmark them and save them as web archives, the most powerful way to search the web is undoubtedly DEVONagent Pro (reviewed here). In fact, I found it works more or less as good as Scrivener (reviewed here), although it does lack many of Scrivener’s dedicated authoring tools that make the life of any writer a lot easier.ĭEVONthink’s strength lies more in its (re-)search capabilities, and its functionality once you integrate it with DEVONtechnologies’ other offerings DEVONagent Pro and DEVONsphere Express (and later: DEVONsphere Server, no doubt).

One last thing I tried out for myself, using DEVONthink Pro Office by itself, was using the app as an authoring tool. This feature, combined with its indexing capability, tags and categorization functionality, essentially allows you to use DEVONthink Pro as a desktop DAM (Digital Asset Management) system. Selecting the latter allows you to view the file’s content in a view port. You can view files as list, as icons, in iTunes format, etc. Using DEVONthink Pro cleverly also means selecting the correct viewing method. Even movies are not a problem, and the QuickLook functionality works just as in the Finder. Of course I tried adding web pages, PDFs, images, and movies to DEVONthink Pro (Office).

One word with regards to indexing offline discs like CDs and DVDs: you should name your discs the same as in the database or vice versa if you don’t, you won’t know where to look for the files - unless you want to play disc jockey until DEVONthink has found the right disc.

DEVONthink Pro offers quick search and this extended search capability. This means you can have the same file categorized in different databases or database folders without them taking up extra space. This is another powerful feature as replicates are like instances: if you change the original, the replicant changes with it.

In the DEVONthink Pro jargon you can have duplicates and replicates. It gets better: you can create smart folders inside DEVONthink Pro which allow you to catch duplicates(and other files as well, of course). No files are copied when indexing - it very much works like Spotlight, with one exception: when the disc is offline, you can still search the database.
